It's 1920s New York City. It's flappers and Follies, jazz and gin. It's after the war but before the depression. And for certain group of bright young things it's the opportunity to party like never before.

For Evie O'Neill, it's escape. She's never fit in in small town Ohio and when she causes yet another scandal, she's shipped off to stay with an uncle in the big city. But far from being exile, this is exactly what she's always wanted: the chance to show how thoroughly modern and incredibly daring she can be.

But New York City isn't about just jazz babies and follies girls. It has a darker side. Young women are being murdered across the city. And these aren't crimes of passion. They're gruesome. They're planned. They bear a strange resemblance to an obscure group of tarot cards. And the New York City police can't solve them alone.

Evie wasn't just escaping the stifling life of Ohio, she was running from the knowledge of what she could do. She has a secret. A mysterious power that could help catch the killer - if he doesn't catch her first.

Normally I don't read historical (unless it's by Rachel Harris or Cassandra Clare) so I was a bit skeptical about this before starting. I've never read any of Libba's books before so this was my first. I have to say, I think I'll read anything and everything by her now. :)

I didn't expect this book to be MASSIVE. You can imagine my face when it came through the post and it was a hardback with 592 pages. You guys know I read more on the 200-400 pages scale, since I get bored really easily. But surprisingly, I couldn't put this book down. I just had to keep reading. I had to know what happens.

The plot was very engaging and exciting. There was a lot of mystery and suspense and action and everything else you would want in a book.

Evie was a great main character. I loved her. She's not really your typical YA female heroine that you always see on other novels. There's something very different and special about her. I loved getting to know her more as the book goes on.

I really enjoyed this book. I think there's something for every reader out there, and I highly recommend this book.

  1. The book size was what actually made me stay away from this in the first place, but now that you say it was hard to put down, I'll definitely give it a try. Thanks for the review! :)

  2. Ohh I recommend Libba Bray's Gemma Doyle series! I loved that!

Ohh wow I didn't realise how BIG the book was :o But I'm glad you couldn't put it down! This one doesn't exactly sound like one that I would usually read but I'm gonna give it a go.

  3. I loved the Gemma Doyle series, but I was not sure about reading this book until I read this review, so I may just have to give it a try.

  4. I have mixed feelings about Libba Bray after reading Going Bovine and Beauty Queens. The Gemma Doyle trilogy was amazing, but those two were just a little too odd for me. But I think I'll have to give The Diviners a chance. Great review!
